In an unexpected move, Apple CEO Tim Cook today sent a public statement apologizing for Apple maps in iOS 6.0 and recommending iOS users using alternatives such as Google Maps (Google Maps) or including Nokia.

In a letter posted on Apple's official website, this is what Tim Cook claimed:

"To our customers,

At Apple we strive to produce products that offer the best international experience to our potential customers. With the launch of our new maps last week, we fail in that goal. We feel the frustration we have caused to our customers and we are making every effort to improve maps.

Maps launched the first version of iOS. Over time we wanted to start offering our customers a better service maps including navigation features like 'turn-by-turn', integrating voice, 'Flyover' and vector maps. To meet this goal, we had to create a new mapping application from scratch.

Already more than 100 million devices using the new Maps application, with new users are joining every day. In less than a week, iOS users have already made more than 500 million searches. The more customers use our maps, will become better and we are very grateful for all the views we have received.

While improving the maps, you can try other alternatives downloading applications from the App Store as Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google Maps or Nokia going to your website and establishing a shortcut icon on your home screen.

Our mission is to make Apple the world's best products. We know that's what you expect from us and so, we will not stop working on maps until it becomes a quality product.

Tim Cook.

Apple CEO ".

Finally the reviews have served some purpose. It was totally unexpected that Tim Cook should recommend other applications of its main competitors. Hopefully Maps improvements come soon.
