Hardware of iPhone 5

Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 5 on September 12, 2012 , and although it has been many leaks about his appearance, yet we know nothing of its technical characteristics. It is normal, Apple rarely gives details on the processor will use its new iPhone, or any of their iOS devices. Normally announce the name of the processor, perhaps the same number of cores, but usually only tells us how many times faster than the previous generation is both processor and issues graphical power. And the amount of RAM? We forget. Do not think we have these details until iPhone 5 hits the market and spoiling any website to teach him. Here's how Apple works. Meanwhile, all we can do is speculate based on what Apple has done in the past and what we have today.

Apple introduced its first SoC (System on a chip), called A4, in 2010. This processor is the one used in the original iPad and a version of it is also on the iPhone 4. The Apple A4 uses ARM Cortex-A8 processor and a PowerVR SGX 535 graphics processor. It is manufactured in 45nm, along with some performance improvements provided by Instrisity, a company that Apple bought later. On the iPhone, came with 512MB of RAM.

Apple introduced the dual-core processor Apple A5 SoC in 2011 with the iPad 2 , and, again, used a version of it for the iPhone 4S. The Apple A5 is an ARM Cortex-A9 and PowerVR SGX543MP2 graphics processor, along with 512MB of RAM. The original Apple A5 was manufactured in 45 nm, but the Apple TV of 2012 introduced a 32 nm, which was also used to perform a silent upgrade of the iPad 2 in 2012.

When launched the new iPad , everyone expected the processor used was the A6. Instead, Apple used a version of the A5 with four cores and PowerVR SGX543MP4 GPU, reaching up to 1GB of RAM. A version called A5X Apple.

We do not believe that Apple will use the A5X in the iPhone 5, at least for now. The main purpose was to support A5X Apple Retina display with 2048 x 1536 resolution using the new iPad. The iPhone with Retina display and resolution 960 × 640 and came in 2010 with the iPhone 4, so the processor load is more controlled. Even if the rumors are true, and the iPhone 5 has a 4-inch Retina display with 1136 × 640 resolution, the raw power of A5X still not necessary.

It seems more likely that Apple will continue the same general line as the processor and focus on improving performance with the graphics processor of the iPhone 4S for the iPhone 5. We do not know if you continue to use the ARM Cortex A9. The newest and most efficient is the ARM Cortex A-15, the new generation of CPU, like the PowerVR 6 Rogue is the next generation of graphics processors. This would give the iPhone 5 being the best and highlight Apple, but Apple could also save it for next year when they launch the iPad 4 and iPhone 6. The most conservative option would be to use a version of the A5 processor in 32 nm and attach a 1GB of RAM.

The more RAM the better. For everything from the number of pages that could have Safari open at a time, until the applications or games that can be run, without sacrificing the system. Apple has historically been quite stingy with RAM. True, 1GB of RAM today is not excessive, but allow the iPhone 5 would work much better.

As for storage, Apple has doubled the maximum capacity available every two years. While the original iPhone had a maximum of 8GB, half a year later introduced a 16GB version. The iPhone 3G also had a maximum of 16GB. Both the iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 4 32GB maximum rose. Last year, Apple doubled this capacity with the iPhone 4S, reaching up to 64GB. History suggests that the iPhone 5 will have a maximum of 64GB of storage capacity.

There was a leak suggesting that Apple could be called A6 processor that includes the iPhone 5. However, as Apple finally call the processor of the iPhone 5 does not matter much, because since Apple controls both the software and the hardware, no need to only pull chips or cores, more importantly the code.

Therefore, if not called A6, is somewhat closer to A5 in which the story A5X to approach and architecture used. What is clear is that the power performance ratio will remain very balanced in the next generation of Apple's smartphone.

How do you think Apple will call the processor used in the iPhone 5? For now we will continue conforming to the rumors about the iPhone 5 that appear.
